What is Interchange?

Interchange is a fee paid by payment processors to card-issuing banks every time a payment card transaction takes place. The interchange fee covers the cost of processing the transaction and the risk associated with the transaction.

Interchange fees are set by the payment card networks (such as Visa, Mastercard, and American Express) and vary based on various factors, including the type of card, the merchant's industry, the transaction amount, and the region where the transaction takes place.

What does PCI compliance mean?

PCI compliance refers to the adherence to the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS), a set of security standards established by major payment card networks, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and JCB.

PCI DSS sets forth a comprehensive framework of security requirements for all entities that store, process, or transmit cardholder data. The goal of PCI DSS is to protect payment card data and prevent data breaches by ensuring that merchants, payment processors, and other entities maintain robust security measures and practices.

What are the requirements for PCI compliance?

The PCI DSS requirements cover a wide range of security measures, including network security, access control, vulnerability management, data protection, and monitoring and testing. The exact requirements vary depending on the level of card processing activity and the specific payment card network requirements.

Merchants and other entities that process payment card transactions must comply with the PCI DSS requirements, which involve regular assessments and audits to ensure that their security measures are adequate and up to date. Failure to comply with PCI DSS can result in fines, legal liabilities, and damage to a merchant's reputation.

Do I still need to be PCI compliant if I only process credit cards a few months out of the year?

Yes, even if you only process credit cards a few months out of the year, you still need to be PCI compliant. PCI DSS applies to all merchants that accept payment cards, regardless of the volume of transactions or the frequency of card processing.

What are PCI non-compliance fees?

PCI non-compliance fees are fees imposed by payment card networks (such as Visa, Mastercard, and American Express) on merchants who fail to comply with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS).

If I already have a “PCI compliant” processing solution or terminal, why do I have to become PCI compliant?

If you are using a "PCI compliant" processing solution or terminal, it means that the solution or terminal has been certified by the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) as meeting certain security requirements. However, it doesn't necessarily mean that your entire payment processing system is fully PCI compliant.

PCI DSS is a comprehensive set of security standards that covers all aspects of payment card data processing, storage, and transmission, including your network, software applications, and business processes. Even if you are using a PCI compliant processing solution or terminal, you may still have vulnerabilities in other areas of your payment processing system that need to be addressed to ensure that you are fully PCI compliant.

Furthermore, PCI compliance is not a one-time event but an ongoing process that requires regular monitoring, testing, and updating of security measures. Therefore, even if you are currently PCI compliant, you still need to maintain your compliance and undergo regular assessments and audits to ensure that you remain compliant.

Will I receive confirmation, once I become PCI compliant?

Yes, you will receive a certificate that you have become PCI compliant once you have completed the necessary steps and requirements for compliance. You’ll also be provided with a logo that can be displayed on your site if you choose to do so.
